What Is a Handicap Bet? Spread Betting in Football Explained

A handicap bet — also known as spread betting or Asian handicap in some markets — is one of the most common bet types in football. Rather than betting on a simple win/draw/loss outcome, a handicap gives one team a virtual advantage or disadvantage before kick-off, creating a more balanced market for both sides.

Why Do Bookmakers Offer Handicap Bets?

When two teams are unevenly matched — for example, Manchester City hosting a relegation-threatened side — a standard 1X2 market can produce extremely short odds on the favourite. Bookmakers introduce a handicap to even the contest and offer more attractive prices on both outcomes.

Instead of Manchester City at 1.15 to win, you might see Manchester City -1.5 goals at 1.80. Now City must win by two or more goals for your bet to succeed.

How Does a Handicap Bet Work?

The handicap is applied to the final score. Here is how it works in practice:

  • Negative handicap (favourite): The team must win by more than the stated margin. Example: Team A -1 means Team A must win by 2 or more.
  • Positive handicap (underdog): The team can lose by less than the margin and your bet still wins. Example: Team B +1 means Team B must not lose by 2 or more.
  • Level handicap (0:0): If the match ends in a draw, stakes are returned — similar to a Draw No Bet.

Whole Number vs Half Number Handicaps

Handicaps can be set at whole numbers (e.g. -1, +2) or half numbers (e.g. -1.5, +0.5).

Half number handicaps eliminate the possibility of a push (returned stakes), because you cannot score half a goal. This makes the outcome definitive — you either win or lose.

Whole number handicaps can result in a push if the margin equals the handicap exactly. In that case, your stake is refunded.

Asian Handicap vs European Handicap

There are two main variants of handicap betting in football:

  • European Handicap: Three-way market — you can bet on the handicap result being a home win, draw, or away win.
  • Asian Handicap: Two-way market — the draw is eliminated by using quarter or half-goal handicaps. This reduces the bookmaker margin and often offers better value.

Asian handicap is popular among experienced bettors because removing the draw option means the odds more accurately reflect true probabilities.

Handicap Betting Example

Suppose Arsenal host Burnley. The odds are:

  • Arsenal -1.5 goals: 1.90
  • Burnley +1.5 goals: 1.95

If you back Arsenal -1.5 and they win 2-0, your bet wins. If they win 1-0, your bet loses — because they have not covered the 1.5 goal handicap.

When Does Handicap Betting Offer Value?

Handicap betting is most useful in matches with a clear favourite where the standard win odds offer poor value. By taking the favourite on a handicap, you can find odds worth backing — especially when you expect a dominant performance.

Summary

Handicap betting levels the playing field between unevenly matched sides by applying a virtual goal advantage or deficit before kick-off. It is a core market type offered by every major bookmaker and a useful tool when standard win odds are too compressed to offer real value.
